Product description
Sitaw," also known as yardlong bean or long bean, is a popular legume in the Philippines, a climbing plant with long, edible pods, and is botanically related to cowpeas.
Herbaceous climbing plant grown for it strikingly long edible pods. Leaves are trifoliate, green, oval and smooth-edged. Flowers are purplish, about 1.5 centimeters long, giving out green and slender yardlong pods.
To plant sitaw (string beans) seeds, you can use either the drill or hill method, planting 2-3 seeds per hill or 18-20 seeds per meter, covering them lightly with soil, and ensuring proper spacing and irrigation.
1. Choose the right method:
Drill Method: Plant 18-20 seeds per linear meter, distributing them uniformly in furrows, then cover lightly with 3-4 cm of fine soil.
Hill Method: Plant 2-3 seeds per hill, using the specified distance indicated in the table, then cover lightly with 3-4 cm of fine soil.
2. Prepare the soil: Ensure the soil is well-drained and rich in organic matter. Mix well-decomposed animal manure, compost, and garden soil.
Drill Method: Make shallow furrows (1-2 inches deep) and sow the seeds, ensuring they are spaced evenly.
Hill Method: Create small mounds or hills and place 2-3 seeds in each hill, then cover lightly with soil.
Soaking Seeds (Optional): Some gardeners recommend soaking the seeds in water for 6-24 hours before planting to help with germination.
Spacing: Allow adequate space between plants (2-4 inches within the row for bush beans).
Depth: Plant seeds about 1 inch deep.
5. Watering and Care: Water the seeds gently after planting and keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.
As the plants grow, provide support with trellises or stakes, especially for pole beans. Regularly remove weeds and apply fertilizer as needed. Pick the pods every two days to prolong the production period of the plant.
