Wanlian, usually refers to the small and medium type of lotus, with the same scientific name as lotus. Bowl lotus leaves are round, with floating leaves floating on the water surface, and standing leaves extending above the water surface; while the water lily leaves are round with gaps, and only floating leaves floating on the water surface.

The underground stems are long and plump, with long knots and round leaf shields. Growth environment

Like sunshine, intolerant to shade. Heat-loving, the suitable temperature for growth is 20-30℃, and the growth stagnates when the temperature is lower than 15℃. Planting method

1. Sowing time: lotus seeds have no dormancy period, so long as the water temperature can be kept above 16℃, sowing can be done in all seasons. Under the conditions of suitable temperature and light, lotus seeds need 50-60 days from sowing to flowering in spring, and 60-80 days in autumn.

2. Seed treatment: The shell of the lotus seed is hard and compact. It must be artificially broken before soaking the seeds. One end of the lotus seed has a small protrusion and the other end has a small pit. Wear the end with the small pits on the rough concrete floor and wear out a layer of skin. Be careful not to injure the inner kernels or to remove the shell. The purpose of dermabrasion is to allow water to penetrate through this gap, so that the seeds will absorb water and expand.

3. Seed soaking and accelerating germination: soak the broken seeds in warm water of about 20-40 degrees. When the water temperature is lower than 20 degrees, the seeds will germinate and grow too slowly. When soaking a small amount of seeds at home, it can be kept in a thermos. The speed of germination is also related to the temperature. Under the condition of 30 degrees Celsius, the seeds can germinate after soaking and accelerating germination in 3-5 days, and the embryo will stick out from the breach.

4. Transplanting sprouts: Choose bottomless pots or plastic flower pots with a diameter of 45cm～75cm, add half a pot of garden soil or river pond mud without chemical pollution to the pot, soak in water two weeks in advance, and do not apply fertilizer. When transplanting, press the fine roots of the small lotus seedlings into the mud, plant one plant per pot, add appropriate amount of water after transplanting, so that the water does not submerge the small lotus leaves.

Fertilize

Wanlian likes fertilizer. If it lacks fertilizer, it will take root and grow leaves slowly and lack vitality. Therefore, a small amount of decomposed cake fertilizer liquid or bean bran or peanut bran should be mixed in the pot soil before planting as a base fertilizer. However, although Wanlian is a fertilizer-loving plant, it should not be over-fertilized. Generally, a small amount of base fertilizer such as cake fertilizer is mixed into the cultivation soil during planting to meet its needs throughout the year. There is no need to apply top-dressing to avoid excessive growth. However, in order to prolong the flowering period, in summer, a grain of decomposed cake fertilizer the size of a plum pit can be used as top dressing, and it can be stuffed into the mud in the center of the bowl. Do not apply around the wall of the bowl. Easily cause root injury. Do not apply too much basal fertilizer, otherwise the leaves will be sparse in the light ones, and the lotus roots in the heavy ones will be "burned".

The lotus plants are delicate and tender, so they should be properly shaded around noon in summer and early autumn to avoid direct sunlight. It is advisable to turn the pot and change the soil before germination in early spring each year.
