Native to Africa, tropical America and India. Like sunshine, heat and humidity, and intolerant of frost. Intolerant of barrenness, prefers loose, fertile and well-drained soil. Widely cultivated all over the world, common garden plants. In addition, it has high medicinal value.
Celosia likes a warm and dry climate, is afraid of drought, likes the sun, and cannot tolerate waterlogging, but it does not have strict soil requirements and can be planted in general soil gardens.
How to plant celosia seeds
1. Seed sowing: Seed propagation is commonly used for the propagation of cockscomb. Choose the plots during the Qingming period, apply enough base fertilizer, till and raking evenly, level the borders, spread the seeds evenly on the borders, cover the seeds slightly, and pour them steadily. Permeable, seedlings can emerge in 10-15 days when the temperature is 15-20℃.
2. Seedling management: Cockscomb seedlings are 2 inches high, thinned according to the row spacing of 1 foot and the plant spacing of 8 inches. The seedlings under the spacing can be transferred to other fields, and they must be watered after transfer. Weeding and loosening the soil during the seedling stage, watering as little as possible when it is not too dry, and topdressing may be applied once the height of the seedlings.
1. Soil: Although cockscomb has lax requirements on the soil, it is suitable for planting on well-drained, loose and fertile sandy loam. If the drainage is poor, it is prone to root rot.
2. Watering: Celosia likes dry air and avoids waterlogging. It consumes a lot of water during the growth period. It must be fully irrigated in hot summer and prevent excessive water. In case of continuous rain, you should pay attention to drainage.
3. Sunshine: Celosia likes warmth and avoid cold. There should be sufficient light during the growth period. At least 4 hours of light should be guaranteed every day. The most suitable growth temperature is 18-28℃.
4. Diseases and insects: Cockscomb has fewer diseases and insects, and it is prone to wilt at the seedling stage, and there is aphid damage during the growth stage. Attention should be paid to prevention and control. Root rot should be pulled out of the diseased plant and sprayed with copper sulfate.
5. Pruning: The dwarf celosia varieties should be topped after planting to promote branching. When used as cut flowers, they can be topped when the plant height is 20 to 30 cm.
6. Fertilization: Apply enough base fertilizer for cockscombs when sowing, and apply a thin compound liquid fertilizer every 10 days before and during the flowering period. The amount of nitrogen fertilizer should not be too much to prevent excessive growth and lodging.
7. Harvesting: Celosia is generally harvested before and after the white dew, the seeds gradually turn black and mature, and the moss can be cut off in time, and the flowers and seeds can be managed separately and used as medicine.
