1. Soil preparation and planting
Okra can be planted in the open air from April to August every year, and it can be eaten in the same year. If it is planted in a greenhouse, it can be sown in advance and harvested in advance. Okra generally adopts the method of live broadcast, and the seeds can be soaked in warm water for one day before sowing for germination treatment. Okra is not very strict on the soil, but loose and fertile soil with sufficient light can increase production. Deeply plow the soil before planting, and then apply enough base fertilizer, mainly organic fertilizer, and okra should not be stubbled continuously.
After okra emerges, intertillage and weeding should be carried out in time to prevent weeds from competing with them for nutrients. Intertillage should be carried out after each fertilization to prevent soil compaction from affecting the growth of okra. If the planting density is high, the bottom side branches can be cut off appropriately in the later stage. Okra grows very quickly during the fruiting period. If there are more storms in the local area, bamboo poles can be inserted to prevent lodging.
3. Water and fertilizer management
The growth period of okra is relatively long, and the plants are large, so the demand for water and fertilizer is great. On the premise of applying sufficient base fertilizer in the early stage, topdressing should be carried out several times, and the first topdressing should be carried out after emergence, mainly urea. More fertilization should be applied during the fruiting period to promote high yield. Okra is relatively drought-tolerant, and does not require much water at the seedling stage. In summer, attention should be paid to the moisture of the soil, and the accumulated water should be removed in time after the rain to prevent the death of rotten roots.
There are relatively few pests and diseases of okra, and lesions will appear on the branches and leaves during continuous cloudy and rainy days. After the weather is fine, lime can be used to prevent infection, and an appropriate amount of Bordeaux mixture can be sprayed for prevention and control in the early stage. Pests mainly include aphids, cutworms, etc. Carbaryl WP can be sprayed.
Okra eats young pods, so timely harvesting is very important. Too early will affect its yield, and if it is too late, it will cause aging and reduce the taste. The general harvesting time is one week after the flowers wither. The best time to harvest is in the evening. Be careful not to hurt the branches when harvesting. The harvest period can be as long as 3 months.
