Product description
Planting smooth okra is a rewarding process that can yield a bountiful harvest. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you grow this vegetable.
1. Prepare the Soil
•Location: Select a sunny spot with at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.
•Soil Quality: Smooth okra prefers well-draining, loamy soil with good fertility. Aim for a pH of 6.0 to 6.8.
•Amendments: Mix in compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility and drainage.
2. Sowing Seeds
•Direct Sowing: Sow seeds about 1 inch deep and 12-18 inches apart in rows spaced 3 feet apart.
•Starting Indoors: If starting seeds indoors, sow them 4-6 weeks before the last frost date and transplant them outdoors once seedlings are about 3-4 inches tall.
3. Watering
•Initial Watering: Water the seeds gently after sowing to ensure good soil contact.
•Ongoing Care: Water regularly, especially during dry spells. Aim for deep watering to encourage strong root development.
4. Thinning
•Thinning Seedlings: Once seedlings have a few true leaves, thin them to about 12-18 inches apart to give each plant enough space to grow.
5. Fertilizing
•Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting time and again when the plants are about a foot tall. Follow package instructions for application rates.
6. Pest Management
•Monitoring: Watch for common pests like aphids, flea beetles, and spider mites. Use organic methods, such as insecticidal soap or neem oil, if needed.
7. Harvesting
•Timing: Harvest okra pods when they are young and tender, usually 2-3 inches long, and before they become too fibrous. This is typically 60-70 days after planting. Regular harvesting encourages more production.
