It is valued for its ability to kill algae, including stubborn green, black, and mustard algae. However, its use must be carefully managed to avoid staining and excessive copper buildup in the water.
How to Use Copper Sulfate in Swimming Pools:
•Determine Dosage:The typical dosage is2–6 pounds per 1,000,000 gallonsof pool water, depending on the severity of the algae problem.For smaller pools, carefully calculate the required amount based on the pool’s volume.
•Dissolve Before Application:Dissolve the copper sulfate in water before adding it to the pool to ensure even distribution and prevent clumping.Use warm water to speed up dissolution if needed.
•Application:Pour the dissolved solution around the pool perimeter while the circulation system is running. This helps distribute the copper evenly throughout the water.
•Monitor Copper Levels:Regularly test the copper levels in the pool using a pool testing kit. The ideal range is0.2–0.4 ppm (parts per million).Levels higher than 0.6 ppm can cause staining on pool surfaces and may irritate swimmers.
•Prevent Overuse:Avoid over-treating the pool. Excessive copper can lead to discoloration of water and surfaces and can interact with other chemicals, reducing effectiveness.
