Apog or agricultural lime, is a soil conditioner made from crushed limestone or dolomitic limestone. Ag lime works by dissolving and releasing a base that lowers the acidity of the soil.
For crops growing in less-than-ideal acidity conditions, agricultural lime can boost a farmer’s profit potential by providing a number of benefits, including improving fertilizer efficiency by as much as 50 percent.
Can be used for piggery/poultry farm disinfection — neutralizes odors by absorbing excess moisture and reducing bacterial growth.
Benefits Of Agriculture Lime:
🌱Improving the physical, chemical and biological properties of the soil
🌱Promoting better nitrogen fixation by legumes
🌱Increasing the availability of nutrients to plants
🌱Reducing toxicities in the soil
🌱Enhancing the effectiveness of some herbicides
🌱Supplying calcium, magnesium and other minerals to crops
How and when to apply lime
Lime can be incorporated into the soil or simply top-dressed and left to leach into the soil with subsequent rainfall.
Lime application at sowing:
Lime is relatively insoluble (does not dissolve easily). Thus, it is slow to react. For maximum benefit, it should be worked into the soil when resowing a pasture or sowing a summer fodder crop.
Lime application as a top dressing:
Lime can be applied as a topdressing (in other words, spread on uncultivated soil or existing pasture) if a paddock is to remain in the pasture phase for several years
