A vacutainer blood collection tube is a sterile glass or plastic test tube with a colored rubber stopper that seals the tube internally to produce a vacuum that makes it easier to draw a certain amount of liquid. In order to stabilize and maintain the specimen until analytical testing, vacutainer tubes may contain additives. A colored plastic or rubber cap is placed on top of each tube. The color (red, yellow, etc.) of each tube top or plastic cap indicates which additives are present because additives are frequently included in tubes that mix with the blood during collection.
