Fresh diatomaceous earth powder is required every time you backwash your DE filter and will keep your filter working at peak performance. After back washing, add 1 lb. of DE Powder per 10 sq. ft. filter area. DE Powder is lighter than other dry measures - 1 lb of DE powder is about equal to a 1 lb coffee can. Upon initial start up of a DE filter, with fully hosed-clean or new grids, you should add more DE Powder, perhaps 1 lb per 5-7 sq. ft. of filter area.
