Circular needles are one of the most versatile tools in a knitter's kit. These needles are most commonly used to knit in the round. One circular needle of the right length can allow you to easily finish your project (like beanies, cardigans, tops, and sweaters), but two long circular needles could be used to knit an in-the-round project of almost any length (just search "knitting in the round on two circular needles"). You could even knit small in-the-round pieces (like socks) with the magic loop method!
Circular needles could also be used to knit flat and are especially useful for large, flat, knitted pieces (like shawls and blankets). Some knitters even prefer to use circular needles over straight ones for their projects since you would never lose the other needle while finishing a work, and you could even move the stitches on to the cord when you're not knitting so they don't accidentally slide off of your needles.
