Battery solutions contain sulfuric acid (H2SO4cap H sub 2 cap S cap O sub 4), also known as battery acid, and other chemicals, depending on the type of battery. Sulfuric acid is a mineral acid that's highly corrosive and poisonous. It is diluted with purified water to a concentration of 30β50% to prevent corrosion and ensure safety. Some lead-acid battery solutions also contain sodium perborate (NaBO3cap N a cap B cap O sub 3), which is a corrosion inhibitor that helps prevent the battery from corroding.
Other types of batteries use chloroaluminate sodium as their electrolyte, which is a more efficient and cost-effective option compared to lead-acid batteries. Nickel-metal hydride batteries use alkaline electrolytes, typically potassium hydroxide (KOHcap K cap O cap H), which are more environmentally friendly and have a longer lifespan compared to lead-acid batteries.
It is important to understand what battery electrolyte is, what it does, and why it gets low before you try to service your own battery. Battery solutions are highly corrosive and can cause severe burns. They should be handled with caution and stored in glass or other nonreactive containers. Adding electrolyte to a car battery is a complicated subject, so it's important to follow the instructions carefully and consult a professional if you're unsure about the process.
