The primary advantage of coated strings is in their ability to withstand corrosion (due to its corrosion-resistant properties).
Sweat and oils from your skin, along with changing climates can cause your strings to deteriorate. If you do not regularly clean your strings, debris and oil will accumulate in the spaces of the wrap wire, where it accelerates the corrosion process and eventually corrupts the strings and kills the tone.
