To ensure the best results, it is important to use fresh water only and avoid using salt water or chlorine. Water from rivers, streams, rainwater, or ponds is suitable. The area should be partially shaded and not too hot or too covered, and sunlight is needed for photosynthesis. The water depth should be 6-10 inches from the soil and fertilize with dried manure. It is recommended to use cow's, goat's, and carabao's manure as they are organic and do not contain harmful bacteria. It is not recommended to use pig's or chicken manure as they are commercial feeds and have high acidity content in their poop, which can kill the azolla. In case of no available manure, Vermipost/vermicast can be used.
To create a healthy and sustainable pond, it is important to prepare the soil properly. 1 kilogram of dried manure and 1 kilogram of soil per square meter should be used. The pond size is limitless and depends on the location and availability of the lot. In case of less space, the batya system can be used to propagate the azolla.
