A tourniquet is a device, such as a strip of cloth or a band of rubber, that is wrapped tightly around a leg or an arm to prevent the flow of blood to the leg or the arm for a period of time. It may be used when drawing blood or to stop bleeding after an injury. Tourniquets work by squeezing large blood vessels. The squeezing helps stop blood loss. If the pressure does not stop the bleeding, and the dressing becomes soaked with blood, you will need to apply a tourniquet. If the bleeding doesn't stop, place a tourniquet at least 2-3 inches from the wound. The tourniquet may be applied and secured over clothing.
