-What is NexGard Spectra?
NexGard Spectra is indicated for the monthly treatment and prevention of fleas (Ctenocephalides sp.), the control of paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus), Brown Dog Tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) and Bush ticks (Haemaphysalis longicornis) in dogs, the prevention of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) and the treatent and control of roundworms (Toxocara canis and Toxoascaris leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis).
-What is the active ingredient in NexGard Spectra and how does it work?
NexGard Spectra contains afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime. Both of these ingrediants are a parasite neurotoxins and work by interfering with the transmission of impulses along the parasites' nervous system. This causes paralysis of the parasite and its ultimate death.
-How often is NexGard Spectra used?
To be effective against fleas, ticks and heartworm, NexGard Spectra is given orally once a month to dogs.
-From what age can NexGard Spectra be used?
NexGard Spectra is safe to use in puppies from 8 weeks of age and that are over 2kgs in bodyweight.
-How quickly does NexGard Spectra work?
NexGard Spectra kills fleas within 8 hours of administration. NexGard Spectra demonstrated that within 48 hours of dosing 95% of Paralysis and Brown Dog ticks were killed. 95% of Bush ticks were killed by 72 hours.
-Is NexGard Spectra water fast?
Because NexGard Spectra is an oral medication it is not affected by swimming, bathing or shampooing before or after administration.
-Does NexGard Spectra need to be given with food?
NexGard Spectra is a soft, highly palatable chewable that is readily consumed by dogs. It should be given in a manner that encourages the dog to chew rather than swallow the Nexgard Spectra whole. NexGard Spectra may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that would normally swallow treats whole. Alternatively, NexGard Spectra may be added intact to a small amount of dog food.
-Can I use NexGard Spectra all year-round?
Fleas and in some areas ticks, are a year-round problem and so NexGard Spectra should be administered every 4 weeks throughout the year.
-Can NexGard Spectra be used on pregnant or lactating animals?
The safe use of NexGard Spectra chewables in breeding males and females has not been evaluated.
-Can NexGard Spectra be used in cats?
No. NexGard Spectra is only registered for use in dogs. It should not be given to cats.
