The aneroid sphygmomanometer is commonly used for the indirect measurement of blood pressure despite significant concerns about its accuracy. Blood pressure should be measured with the patient comfortably seated for at least 5 minutes, and with the arm at heart level. Talking should be avoided as that may raise blood pressure transiently. More than one reading should be done, and each should be separated by at least 1 to 2 minutes.
