How to remove odor from leather:
1. Dry leather products immediately after getting wet. If the leather is wet or has mold spots, dry it immediately. Moisture can permanently damage leather and create odors that are difficult to remove. There are several simple ways to dry leather
Place leather goods in a place in the house where they are not exposed to direct sunlight, such as next to a window or behind a screen. Direct sunlight can cause leather to crack, peel or even wear.
Set your hair dryer to low temperature and blow away any moisture or large water stains on the leather product. Be careful not to get too close, otherwise the leather products will crack or even peel off.
Use a clean, dry rag to dry leather items, especially shoes, jackets, or bags. Be careful not to use alcohol-containing or fragrant-smelling products, such as perfume, to cover up odors. The chemicals in these things will enter the pores of the leather and damage the leather products over time.
Wrap leather items in newspaper or wrapping paper. Newspaper and wrapping paper are highly breathable and will absorb odors from leather products. Check when packing to make sure newspapers and leather goods are dry enough. Additionally, the loose fibers in newspaper make it softer and more absorbent than paper like office paper.
Wrap up a few pieces of newspaper and stuff them into the box, place the leather items in the pile, then close the box and keep it airtight for a day or two.
Check to see if the newspaper has been effective in getting rid of the odor. Maybe the leather goods will have to sit among the newspapers for another day.
Use a vinegar solution to remove odors from leather products. Some people may not like the smell of vinegar, but acetic acid does a great job of removing odors from leather.
Before using any acidic cleaner, test it on a small area of your leather item to see if it fades. Mix distilled white vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio, then find a small area and lightly apply the vinegar solution. If there is no fading or cracking, you can continue cleaning the entire leather product with the vinegar solution.
Use a clean rag to rub the vinegar solution onto the surface of the leather product.
You can also use a spray bottle to spray the vinegar solution onto the leather item and then wipe it dry with a rag.
If the smell is too strong, soak the leather products in vinegar solution for 5-10 minutes. Leather products should be dried after soaking, otherwise mildew will develop over time.
Seal leather products in baking soda to remove odors. Baking soda works well at absorbing odors and is also safe for leather products. You’ll need baking soda and a pillowcase or zipper bag that can hold any leather goods.
Place the leather item in a pillowcase or zip-top bag and sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on the inside of the item.
Tie the pillowcase tightly or zip up the zipper bag and let it sit overnight or 24 hours.
Use a small vacuum cleaner or clean rag to remove the baking soda, being careful not to scratch the surface of the leather product.
Repeat this process until the odor disappears.
Hang the leather products for a while and the smell will slowly dissipate. Due to the unique characteristics of leather products, adsorbed odors (such as smoke) or the "new leather smell" produced during the tanning process will gradually dissipate over time. Do not use perfume or other products to cover up the odor on leather products, which will make it difficult for the odor to dissipate. If you can tolerate the smell, wear a leather jacket or leather shoes more often to help dissipate the odor.
Leather products will become softer with more use, and they can also help open pores and dissipate odors.
