The timing of blood glucose readings can vary based on individual circumstances and the recommendations of your healthcare provider.
Fasting Blood Glucose: This is usually the first reading taken in the morning after an overnight fast (usually 8 hours or more). It provides information about your baseline blood glucose level before you've eaten anything.
- Blood glucose meter: This is the device that reads your blood glucose levels.
- Test strips: These are small strips that you insert into the meter to measure your blood glucose.
- Lancet device: This is a small device that holds the lancet (a tiny needle) and is used to prick your finger.
- Lancets: These are small, disposable needles used to obtain a blood sample.
Before testing your blood glucose, wash your hands with soap and water and dry them thoroughly. This helps ensure accurate readings and prevents contamination.
•Prepare the Lancet Device:
Insert a new lancet into the lancet device according to the manufacturer's instructions. Adjust the depth setting if your device allows for customization. A higher depth setting might be needed if you have thick skin.
Insert a new test strip into the blood glucose meter as per the manufacturer's instructions. The meter will usually turn on automatically when a test strip is inserted.
Place the lancet device against the side of your fingertip and press the release button to prick your finger. This will produce a small drop of blood.
•Apply Blood to Test Strip:
Gently touch the edge of the test strip to the blood drop. The strip will draw the blood into the meter for analysis. Some meters require a larger blood sample than others, so make sure you have an adequate amount.
The meter will display your blood glucose reading on the screen after a few seconds.
•Dispose of Waste Safely:
Safely dispose of the used lancet in a sharps container. Dispose of the used test strip according to your local medical waste disposal regulations.
Keep a record of your blood glucose readings, along with the date and time. This information is crucial for managing your diabetes and discussing your progress with your healthcare provider.
•Troubleshooting and Maintenance:
Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for maintaining and calibrating your blood glucose meter. Replace batteries if needed, and clean the meter as directed.
Remember, this is a general guide. If you have any concerns or questions, consult your healthcare provider or a diabetes educator for guidance.
